FS100 Slashed to $2499 at B&H

I've shot with this camera, makes nice pix. Bargin price for new as you might of paid this much for a used one. I guess the 4K thing is killing off the 1080 cameras. FPS tops out at 1080p60 which is respectable. while the ergonomics of the camera leave a bit to be desired its still a real video camera with most of the connectors you want. You can record to an external recorder as well...

Seagate Is Shipping 8TB Drives !

I felt pretty good I had loaded my older mac tower up with a bunch of 3TB drives and I'm running them as an array that does 500mb/sec all day long. Pleasure to edit on. Now Seagate has announced they are shipping 8TB drives to select aka enterprise customers. Shouldn't be long before they are available for the masses. Talk about making easy backups for your collections of perfectly good and working smaller drives ! Also Seagate has hinted about 10tb drives this year as well. The real question - realiability. I hate being the one to buy first gen drives. When I built my 3TBX3 array I ordered toshiba drives. 2 where DOA and were replaces with hitachi units. I suspect they had one big run of bad drives as lots of others where saying the same thing. Guess the smart thing is to wait a few months after they start shipping. Either way pretty welcome and this should also put some real price pressure on SSD's that I like even more. I'd love to put dual 1TB SSD's into my laptop but the price is pretty out there for now. This may help change this. However these 8tb drives because of how close they space the bits should prove to be very very fast ! We'll see.

Goodbye Tungsten

Its no secret tungsten lighting is mostly dead. I put out a couple of leco's ( with working bulbs ! ) and a focusing cyc / broad light to the curb today. The edison connectors and stand adapters worth more than the lights. Those parts went into my spare parts  box.  Even my DP lights rarely work these days. I did fire up one with a 36X24 chimera several months ago on a shoot, but it was for very specific reasons in how I needed to light this one set up.

How many of you know WNEW ? NJ ! long story how I got this light and another one outside of they were sitting in some one else's storage. I was cleaning it out and grabbed them instead of tossing them in the dumpster. Used them maybe twice.... 1K bulbs are probably new with 5-10 hrs on them !

LED's have pretty much replaced all my tungsten. I'm getting another 48 emitter Paradime light this week, in fact the last one ever being built ! Great lights, but no one wants to pay what they are worth so they are finishing up one last production run and thats it. Sad since they are amazing in output, mil spec build quality, weight and overal functionality.

UPDATE : Next morning the lights are gone....just a bit less clutter around here !

Canon Sneaks Out Firmware Update For C100's

There wasn't much announcement about this but Canon release a firmware update for the C100. For standard cameras its 1.0.4.100 and 2.0.4.100 for C100's with the continuous focus update.

Canon Batteries Required !

I had a generic battery in the camera with firmware 1.0.3.100 installed. I went to do the update on below on the screen was the message "Check Battery" ! The battery was fine, its canon firmware trying to lock you into using their batteries if you do the update. Not much you can do.

What Does 1.0.4.100 Do ?

Firmware Version 1.0.4.1.00 incorporates the following improvements and fixes.
1. Compatibility with the Canon RC-V100 Remote Controller (expected to be available in June 2014) has been added.
2. Peripheral illumination correction data has been added for the [CN-E35mm T1.5 L F] EF Cinema lens and the [EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM] EF lens.
3. Fixes a phenomenon in which the EF Cinema lens' F number was incorrectly displayed.

Note:
Firmware Version 1.0.4.1.00 is only for EOS C100 cameras without the Dual Pixel CMOS AF Feature Upgrade. If the EOS C100 camera has had the DAF Feature Upgrade applied, please download Firmware Version 2.0.4.1.00.

Massive Canon 17-120 ENG Style Zoom For S35 Sensor Cameras

Here you go ! Canon steps up with a ENG style zoom for super35 size sensor cameras. MSRP $33k so I won't be getting one anytime soon. Shipping expected in Aug. Dig the EF mount with contacts... no AF so I'm not sure why its even there unless its for sending focal length and foucs distance. Could be interesting on still cameras. Actually the 14-50 cine zoom is a good $10K cheaper minus zoom motor. In fact canon is having some crazy rebate deals if you have a pile of cash around that you want to spend what will get you a 30-105 2.8 with $10K rebate if you get it with C500.

The rebates on their cameras is intersting as C500 and sony F5 are basically the same price and sony is adding in a few extra nice bits like shoulder pad setup.

THINK About Safety This Weekend !

Think about safety when it comes to explosives AKA fireworks, ok !  In this YT video this guy not just flies his DJ Phantom near the exploding fireworks, he flies directly thru the explosions with several near misses. One buring spark seems to hit the lens. While it might of seemed spectacular at first, think about how he endangered the show. What would of happened if the DJ got hit and went down on one of the barges being used to set the fireworks off ? Misfire and explosion if it landed on a yet to fire shell tube ? What about crashing onto one of the boats there ? Especially if the plastic of the plane was on fire because of a direct hit. The thoughtlessness of this operator was really striking.

So while the close flybys are a maybe, and looked great, the fly thrus where not good thinking. Be safe, think !

Another Project : Electronic Ghost Hunting For Paranormal Researchers

I shot this project a while ago, back when I had the JVC HD100. Still holds up and looks ok. So if you ever had any interest in ghost hunting in a more scientific way this is the one to check out. Its a doc and somewhat tutorial view of all the gadgets the team uses to take guess work out of the equation. It also shows their investigative techniques to figure out if a haunting is real or natural causes.
